KEY STAFF

JAMES BAILEY

After completing his architectural studies at Ottawa's Carleton University, James Bailey interned with Arcop Architects of Montreal before returning to his native Alberta to work with Douglas J. Cardinal Architect. It was serendipity that when that firm won a national competition for a new museum in the nation's capital he became the Design Coordinator of a project on the site of his thesis project.

James moved to Toronto in 1987 to open a project office for his employer but by 1992 had established his own firm. Much of his experience has been related to public assembly buildings which is attested to by the firm's portfolio. He has a particular interest in historic buildings and has received a number of awards for his work in the interests of architectural preservation.

Since 2001 James has also been on the faculty of Architectural Technology at Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, where he continues to lecture on architectural history and conducts the final year studio course.

ALBENA BAKALOV

Albena Bakalov has had a leading position with the firm since joining James Bailey Architect in 1998. She is a graduate from the University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Sofia, Bulgaria and become a registered architect in Bulgaria and South Africa before settling with her family in Toronto. Albena and James both hold full memberships in the Ontario Association of Architects and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada which offers clients the security of professional continuity.

Albena has been the Project Architect for much of the firm's portfolio. In addition to her skills as an architect she has contributed much to the organization and management of projects as they move through programming, design and construction.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Technical Support has been provided by a number of individuals, some of whom have been with the firm since its inception (for example, Helmut Klassen who concurrently completed his Ph. D. studies for example) as well as others who have distinguished themselves during their studies and have taken on contractual work with James Bailey Architect (Jorge Torres, Nathan Buhler, Aleida Ijzerman, William Higman, Leo Danzker and Shin Yeong Kang).
